Clean Sport Part 2- Do you know the National Human Anti-Doping Rules?
It is vital if you are competing at a national or international level you understand the rules and guidance surrounding anti-doping – both for humans and equines.
The FEI is part of a collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport led by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The aim of this movement is to protect fair competition as well as athlete health and welfare.
If you are an FEI athlete, you have a role to play in the fight against doping, just like the athletes in any other sport. All FEI athletes (riders, drivers, vaulters) are part of the FEI’s Clean Sport programme for humans.
Please be aware that “doping” behaviors can also result from ignorance.
Changes to the World Anti-Doping Code for 2015 came into effect on 1 January 2015. It is critical that all athletes (competing at both a national and international level) and their support personnel and partners appreciate that the anti-doping system applies to them and ensure that they are fully aware of the changes made in the 2015 Code.
The document of Key Changes to the 2015 Code is housed on the UK Anti-Doping 2015 Code microsite; to visit the site click here: http://www.ukad.org.uk/2015-code

The Athlete Learning Program about Health & Anti-Doping (ALPHA) teaches athletes essential facts on anti-doping processes and how to handle risk situations. It provides athletes with solutions, giving them the tools and options available to stay clean and never to engage in doping out of ignorance or vulnerability.
ALPHA’s first six sessions address the World Anti-Doping Code requirement for athletes to be educated on the following: Doping Control, Whereabouts, Therapeutic Use Exemptions and Results Management processes, and medical and ethical reasons not to commit anti-doping rule violations.
ALPHA consists of eight sessions and takes two hours to complete. Sessions seven and eight offer practical help on how to stay clean and how to avoid committing anti-doping rule violations.
Athletes are encouraged to take the course in several stages. Progress is then saved from one visit to another. A score of 80% or higher is required for ALPHA certification. Ahletes with insufficient scores are able to repeat the program.

Athletes must:
- Familiarise themselves with the Prohibited List and make sure to always be updated on the latest version as it is reviewed annually by the World Anti-Doping Agency;
- Systematically ask their medical practitioners to verify that no medication, supplement or treatment they are taking (prescribed or not) involves Prohibited Substances or Methods;
- When purchasing over-the-counter medication, consult their national anti-doping agency or ask the pharmacist to check that the medication does not contain anything prohibited on the Prohibited List currently in force;
- Be extremely cautious with dietary and nutritional supplements. One should never assume that a product is safe to use simply because it is a supplement. Many supplements contain undeclared ingredients including illegal stimulants, steroids, and prescription medications.
