Angel Tough and Callumbus Take Under-16 Honours
Prolific Liverpool winner Angel Tough came up trumps once again at the M&S Bank Arena to land the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show under-16 title. Manchester-based Angel won two classes at the inaugural Liverpool show in 2015, and she has continued her impressive progression ever since. So much so, that she was part of the gold medal-winning Great Britain children on horses team at the 2017 European Championships in Slovakia, riding her latest Liverpool champion Callumbus. And Angel had to really work for victory, with 15 combinations from 23 starters making the jump-off and ensuring a fast and furious battle for top spot. Their time of 27.73 seconds was almost a second quicker than the rest, though, with North Yorkshire’s Hannah Barker finishing second on Cartouche II, LIla Bremner and Cocktail D’Azur taking third and Ava Vernon on Jolie Fleur van de Noordheuval finishing fourth. Reflecting on her Liverpool success story, Angel said: “The first year, I won two classes here on a pony owned by my grandad, and apart from last year, I have won a class at Liverpool every year. “It is my last year at under-16 level. We won a gold medal in 2017, and he (Callumbus) has won pretty much everything, really.“He always pulls it out of the bag. You can spin him on the spot, and he just loves it.“I love this show. Berkshire rider Tatiane Mauree launched the final day of this year’s TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show with an immaculate winning performance at M&S Bank Arena. The 15-year-old, who is based near Newbury, delivered two clear rounds to land the Pony of the Year Show 148cm Championship. It was a feat none of her 16 challengers could manage as Tatiane and Horseabout Zibu took top honours from Elsi Jacques, riding Trevoulter Ladies Man in a two-way jump-off contest. Charlotte Bevan and Champs Palace – quickest of the first round four-faulters – finished third, with Ireland’s Max Foley and Valma De Fougnard in fourth. “It is unusual to have only one double clear,” Tatiane said. “It is a very high standard of course-building, there were some great riders in the class and it really could have been anyone’s day. “I was last to go in the jump-off, I knew Elsi had had four faults, so I knew had to go clear, but then you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. You have to think of the time as well.” Reflecting on her combination with the nine-year-old mare, Tatiane added: “I have had the pony for nearly four years. “She had only been jumping for six months before I got her, and you could see from her temperament that she was going to be really hard-working with the right attitude. “We’ve had a great year. Fab Four Hit The Heights at Liverpool International Puissance night hit new heights at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show on an unforgettable record-breaking occasion. A new Liverpool record height of 2.21 metres was attained by four different combinations after five rounds of jumping as the Hope Valley Saddlery Puissance reached a thrilling conclusion. The top prize was shared by British challengers William Whitaker, riding Rmf Charly, Guy Williams on Mr Blue Sky UK and Harry Whall with Quality Old Joker, plus Ireland’s Michael Pender aboard Hearton du Bois Halleux. It meant a thrilling finale to day three in front of a 5,000-capacity crowd at M&S Bank Arena. And there can have been fewer finer collective exhibitions of power-jumping anywhere in Britain or Europe this year as one of equestrian sport’s most traditional competitions once again took centre-stage. The standard was set in round one when nine from 12 combinations cleared the famous red wall. read moreIreland’s Daniel Coyle delivered a victory that probably surprised even himself at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show on Monday night.
Daniel had not ridden 11-year-old Donjo until this week, but it was never apparent as they convincingly took the Old Lodge Stud 1.50m jump-off class in front of a capacity crowd at the M&S Bank Arena. Last to go in a 10-combination jump-off, they faced a daunting target of 33.11 seconds set by Britain’s William Whitaker and Rmf Echo. But they made light work of it, crossing the finish line in 31.14 seconds to secure a £7,200 top prize, with Australian challenger Rowan Willis taking third aboard Cartouch III and Jack Whitaker finishing fourth on Scenletha. Everybody was trying to go really fast, and I was in the lucky position that I was able to wait until the end, so I knew what I had to do. “I don’t really know the horse. I rode him here for the first time, and he has been brilliant all week. I am very happy with him.“I ride for some Canadian people, and they had the horse with a different rider and the partnership wasn’t going well.“I said I was coming over here for Christmas. I said I could jump the horse here, and it was decided to give it a go.“It fell into place more than it was thought of, so that’s how I ended up riding the horse.“From what I can tell this week, he has been very grumpy in the stable, which is very strange, because out of the stable he is like a gentle giant. The 12-year-old rider, who is based in Leicestershire, won the Wicks Group 128cm Championship at M&S Bank Arena. Tabitha has triumphed at major shows all over the country, and this time it was the 19-year-old pony Living the Dream that delivered the goods for her. Five combinations from 19 starters made the jump-off, with Lucy Bowen-Howard and Toorboy Tommy holding the lead in a time of 31.13 seconds before Tabitha took centre-stage. And it was an impressive display under pressure, clocking 29.52 seconds to continue a rich vein of form. Lucy took second spot, with Emily Irvine and Bunbury Conquest in third and Abigail Gladstone, riding Remote Controlled, finishing fourth. “It’s a dream come true,” a delighted Tabitha said.“I have been trying for the past two years, and it is an amazing opportunity Nicky Creasey has given me to ride her pony.“I have been riding this pony for about 20 months now, and it felt like it was a jump-off for me today.“The course really suited my pony, and it is great to win here again. Melissa Garry led an exciting race to the line to open day three of the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show with a stylish victory. Little more than a second separated the top four finishers in the John Deere at Turner Groundscare 1.25m amateur speed class. Melissa, from Westerham in Kent, guided Hotesse home in a time of 48.38 seconds, edging out runners-up Tracy Holder and Crispina Z by just 29 hundredths of a second. Ireland’s Carol Gee was the early leader, but she had to settle for third on Fernhill Clooney, with Eleanor Hall Mcateer taking fourth aboard Crisanta. Morning action at the M&S Bank Arena then continued with the Clipmyhorse.TV amateur 1.15m speed competition. And it witnessed a dominant display by Elah Conway and 11-year-old mare Acapella as they made the most of a late draw to take the class with time to spare. The Sky’s the Limit for Holly and Denver British Nations Cup star Holly Smith showcased the quality of new ride Denver to end a thrilling day’s action at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show. Leicestershire-based Holly, a major candidate to make the Great Britain team for next year’s Tokyo Olympics, won a scintillating jump-off in the Horseware Ireland 1.50m class. Ten combinations made it through to a race against the clock from 31 first round starters, but Holly and 11-year-old gelding Denver – a former eventer – proved a class apart. They clocked 29.66 seconds to land a top prize of £7,200, and provide further evidence of the horse’s rich potential. Ireland’s Richard Howley finished second aboard Arlo de Blondel in 30.94 seconds, just one hundredth of a second in front of William Whitaker and Rmf Echo. Hailing Denver’s display, Holly said: “He is an absolute freak of a horse – we absolutely love him to bits. He is so game and so athletic.“I haven’t had him for long, but I don’t know what we would do without him. Three seconds were added for every fence down, and Padraig did just enough, pipping British challenger Paul Sims and Second City by just six hundredths of a second to the £2,500 top prize. Riders had qualified for the final via qualifiers at the Bolesworth International and Bolesworth Young Horse Championship earlier this year, in addition to some wildcard entries. The field included top British stars such as Gemma Tattersall, Laura Collett, Izzy Taylor and Emily KIng, but Padraig continued his rich vein of form to lead home a 20-strong field. “I knew it was going to be between the few riders that it turned out to be,” Padraig said. “I have been chasing Cathal around Europe for the last few weeks, so I said no matter what happened here, I had to beat Cathal! That was my main objective. “I think it’s an amazing concept. It is a brilliant night out for the owners, and it’s a chance to be in a really nice venue like this here in Liverpool. “We don’t get that in eventing. We are in the fields in all the weathers – that’s the sport, and that’s great – but this brings a n new dimension. “It is a class that really captures the imagination. There was a great atmosphere, and the crowd love it. There was a great buzz.“When you put showjumping fences into a cross-country course, there are always going to be questions. Lily Attwood continued a run of British success at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show by winning the Voltaire Design speed class on Sunday. Lily followed up four-star international wins for Harriet Nuttall and Guy Williams, at whose Yorkshire yard she is based, yesterday by holding off a strong Irish challenge. In front of a bumper crowd at the M&S Bank Arena, Lily stormed to victory with Karibou Horta, clocking 58.19 seconds and collecting a winner’s purse of just over £4,000. Lilly finished second in Saturday’s speed class behind Guy, but this time she was clear of the field. Ireland’s Daniel Coyle took second aboard Donjo in 59.51 seconds, being closely followed by Billy Twomey and Lady Lou in third, while Shane Breen and Clintofino was fourth. “I saw Daniel go and I thought he was really fast,” Lily said. “My horse is very naturally quick, so I went on a forward seven strides to the last, and it paid off.“I have had him a year now. He is a nine-year-old, so he is still a bit inexperienced in these types of atmospheres.“But he has really excelled himself and he is jumping phenomenally this week. I think he is a very good speed horse.“I will do a 1.50m jump-off class with him tomorrow, which will be the biggest class he has jumped. Olympia, The London International Horse Show concluded in spectacular fashion, with the world’s top Show Jumpers in action in the Turkish Airlines Olympia Grand Prix, which was won by Britain’s Scott Brash. Meanwhile Emanuele Gaudiano demonstrated why he is known as one of the fastest riders on the circuit with a win in The Turkish Airlines Speed Stakes. The evening wrapped-up with the British flag flying once more as Holly Smith was crowned with the 2019 Leading Rider Award. The day also included action from the country’s best young riders, with The Voltaire Design Under 25 British Championship going to Jodie Hall-McAteer and Scotland’s Millie Lawson taking the Equine Rescue Services Mini Stakes for 128cm ponies. The BSPS Ridden Mountain and Moorland Championship Final sponsored by LeMieux was taken by Emma Burrow with Welsh Section D Dyffryngwy Sir Picasso. The final Saracen Horse Feeds Shetland Pony Grand National races of the season saw wins for Lily Phelan on Sedgehill Talisman and Lucy Aspell riding Merkisayre Sea Duble in her last year of being eligible for the competition. Meanwhile The Kennel Club Small Agility Stakes Final went to Dave Munnings with Boost Bite for the third year in a row. BRILLIANT BRASH SAVES THE BEST UNTIL LAST The final night crowd were in for a real treat as a thrilling competition unfolded in the showpiece Turkish Airlines Olympia Grand Prix. It was horsemanship at its best as Scott Brash, in the very last round of 2019, produced a magical display on Lady Harris and Lady Kirkham’s Hello Vincent to snatch the prize from his six rivals in the jump-off. “Winning my last grand prix of the year, in front of a home crowd – it doesn’t get any better than that,” said a visibly thrilled Brash. Australia’s Edwina Tops-Alexander, on brand new ride Identity Vitseroel, had given it her all, her 11-year-old bay gelding trying his heart out with prodigious leaps and turns on a sixpence, but Brash’s smooth horsemanship was pure class and, with the crowd screaming him down to the final fence, the clock showed that he had shaved 0.82 off her time. Holly Smith, who has enjoyed an outstanding show and took the Leading Rider accolade by an astonishing 28 points, finished third on Hearts Destiny and sealed a brilliant season. “I’m absolutely delighted with all three of my horses, but Hearts Destiny has taken me to places I’ve only dreamed of – a bronze medal at the Europeans, winning the Aga Khan Trophy in Dublin. And the calibre of riders here at Olympia – seven of the world’s top 10 – makes it all the more special.” In fourth place was new face James Wilson, 25, on Imagine de Muze, a mare that has given him a dream year. “I’ve been watching Olympia since I was a kid, so this is particularly special,” he said. “This horse has made all my dreams come true: my first World Cup, my first Nations Cup and now my first Grand Prix placing.
