Burghley Cross Country See’s The Queen Of Cross Country Retire : Jonelle Price
Image Courtesy of Julian Portch Photography – all rights reserved and are subject to copyright Well I am speechless, after watching rider after rider having issues all over the course I was so looking forward to seeing this lady go out and show us how it was done but that was not to be the case sadly and I am still shocked at this fact. Joelle is one of the very best cross country riders I have seen and you don’t often see her retire. Faerie Dianimo and Jonelle set off in true style as Jonelle is a rider that can ride at speed with ease, though never look like they are trying for the time they always make good time so was this going to be the second round of the day to get in the time? I was rooting for them so much to do just that, they got a lovely jump through the Land Rover Fountain combination in the arena but soon got held at the Holland Cooper Leaf Pit – Now I hasten to add that is not an easy fence to be restarted at!! Though Jonelle made nothing of the re-start and they were back on their way, beautifully through the Discovery Valley combination at fence 8. Onwards to the Land Rover Trout Hatchery they went. Though it was here where these two got caught out as they hit the final fence of the combination after a sticky time through the first part combination and Jonelle sensibly retired her to save faerie Dianimo for another day. The course had caused issues throughout the day and I was gutted to see this happen to Jonelle as she rides cross country so beautifully but i guess thats when they say you just need a bit of luck on your side as well and today it wasn’t there for Jonelle. The level of Dressage was raised today and Britain sit in 1st , 2nd and 3rd place!! Images courtesy of Lucy Hall Photography – all rights reserved and are subject to copyright Joelle puts in a great performance to finish her dressage on a score of 28.4 so sits her and Faerie Dianimo in joint 7th place going forward to the cross country which is a very strong position for Jonelle to be in especially as she is known as the queen of cross country!! Faerie Dianimo is a stunning looking horse and was in a lovely rhythm throughout the test, not to mention a beautiful uphill frame, yet it looked a relaxed way of going and Faerie Dianimo had a lovely expression on her face, infact she was so relaxed at the first part of her test the ears were flopping in the walk. They entered with purpose and that reflected in the score with them gaining a 10! and then this was later followed by a very scopey extended trot which just floated. The mare was quietly ridden by Jonelle and though looked to get a little hotter towards the end of the test Jonelle did an outstanding job containing her exuberance and rode a very clean crisp test. Interview by Lloyd Bell Productions Just finished your Dressage with Faerie Dianimo with a score of 28.4, thats a very competitive score Well it’s in front of the hubby so that’s always a good start, but look I think it is going to be immaterial at the end of tomorrow, you know a few marks more would have been where I would have like to have been you know 25/26. She was a little bit hotter than I had hoped for today, i thought at the age of 14 she was starting to get a bit more sedentary but clearly not but hopefully that bodes well for tomorrow. She is a real Galloper, but like you said earlier her best results have been round the Pau’s and Luhmuhlen’s, its a very different track here, do you think it will suit her? Well in someways, you know she gets a bit difficult to ride because she is quite sensitive, I am sort of hoping the longer straighter bigger fences might actually back her up a little bit, she is very very confident, but the thing with Burghley is you never quite know if you have got a Burghley horse till you get out there so I think she is that’s why I’ve brought her here but lets see what tomorrow brings! read moreThe Rutman completes his first CCI5*L with Simon Grieve

This is The Rutman’s very first time in the Dressage arena at Burghley and his first CCI5*L so we will say the dressage is perhaps a working progress. The test was very consistent and they had some lovely Extended Canters however the Flying Changes were costly as it looked like The Rutman didn’t particularly care for being collected after the Extended canters and he seemed to then get a bit ‘hot’ in all the changes. Overall this combination certainly have shown they are capable of a very respectable dressage score at this level as there was some very nice moments. I did have the distinct feeling Simon was managing his temperament and I thought he rode very The Rutman very sympathetically and contained his exuberance well. They scored 44.4 penalties so they currently sit joint 65th with George Hilton-Jones going into the cross country day. as we know though this horse is a very good jumper and he could very well climb the leaderboard considerably as Burghley is not for the faint hearted and can catch both horses and riders out. We caught up with Simon to find out his thoughts on his Dressage performance and his thoughts on the cross country……. Interview with Lloyd Bell Productions.. Talk me through your test.. Vinnie is a quirky character when it comes to Dressage and he find the flying changes very difficult so they didn’t happen at all today, I was kind of expecting that you know but the rest of the work I was really pleased with he tried really hard, he is a trier. He just gets quite worried because he is trying so hard to do it right. The rest of it I was really pleased with , he was really good and he’s a really good jumping horse, brave and bold so I am really looking forward to tomorrow. What are your initial thoughts of the cross country course? Its really big and bold and very technical the whole way round so I think you can make a mistake anywhere, there is no let up at the final few fences Mark has been a bit kinder which is nice but the rest of it, its a serious serious track, big and bold and you have got to be really accurate and they have to be with you the whole way so hopefully mine will be! Images by Lucy Hall Photography- all rights reserved and are subject to copyright Thursday Dressage with Bradeley Law First horse into the big arena at Burghley for Michael was Bradeley Law – a lovely looking horse who moves very correctly. It was an early morning test so the crowds hadn’t quiet built up which I am sure helped this horse. He got a much better start to his test than at Badminton earlier this year and the test looked much improved from what we have previously seen from this combination. It was the most supple and relaxed that we have seen Bradeley Law and a much more consistent test was produced which reflected in their score of 38.9%, a huge improvement on their last performance at this level. Last year Bradeley Law and Michael finished 15th after their cross country and showjumping skills saw them move up the leaderboard from 65th place after the dressage so this is certainly a combination to watch. They were sitting in joint 25th place after the first day of dressage but dropped to joint 51st place after Fridays Dressage Talk me through your test? How was the atmosphere in the dressage arena? My test overall was very pleasing. He was much more relaxed from the start, and was very rideable in his lateral movements. He made one costly mistake which is abit frustrating but overall I am happy. The atmosphere was quiet compared to what is it like on a Friday afternoon, which is what he has had to do in his last two CCI5*L. You must be pleased with that test a much improved performance from his last five star event it looked much more consistent – a huge improvement ? I am really pleased with Crocky today. It was a massive improvement. I might get a sub 30 by the time he is 25 Michael Owen and Bradeley Law @ Burghley 2019 Have you had a more in depth look at the cross country course yet? what combinations do you think will pose a question for your horse? I have walked the Xc twice already and wheeled it this afternoon. I think that Joules at the Maltings is a serious combination. You’ll need a very scopey and rideable horse if you want to do the straight routes. There are many narrow, accuracy questions throughout so any slip of concentration you will certainly pay for it!! If Bradeley Law is on his A game, nothing should cause us any problems as long as luck is on your side! Who do you walk the course with and why? I walk all my courses by myself. I know my horses and what their strengths and weaknesses are, so I try and keep it as simple as possible. Too many conflicting ideas aren’t good. Will you watch others ride the cross country before you ? As I am on 2nd XC on Bradeley Law, I won’t be able to watch anyone, but they will certainly be watching me to see how it rides. I will watch a few good riders go around before I take Jim. Do you have any lucky superstitions i.e lucky socks etc? No superstitions. Images courtesy of Julian Portch Photography – all rights reserved and are subject to copyright Well Dee and Playboy a very experienced combination put in a super test and Chequers Playboy looked as relaxed as I’ve ever seen him, they had a super entry which set a very good precedent for the rest of the test. Dee looked stylish and elegant as she always does and they performed a very consistent test. They had some good Flying changes and beautiful Mediums. This was reflected in Dee’s Score of 32.1% putting her just outside the top twenty in 21st place going forward to the cross country. This is their best performance to date in the dressage at this level and Dee certainly looked happy with the test!! We caught up with Dee to find out her thoughts on her test…. Dee you must be happy with that performance, Talk me through your test? So happy with Kenny aka Chequers Playboy’s test . The atmosphere in the arena was perfect for him as it wasn’t too busy . He was very rideable in the arena and really tried his hardest . I was especially pleased with his medium and extended trot and his changes . Have you had a more in depth look at the cross country course yet? what combinations do you think will pose a question for your horse? How many times have you walked the course? I’ve walked the course 3 times now . I’m virtually decided on the lines I’m going to take but I will have time to watch a few in the morning so if a fence isn’t quite going to plan I can opt for a plan b . It’s big and attacking like you expect burghley to be . I think the corner at the maltings could cause problems but hey it’s 5* there’s going to be problems. Who do you walk the course with and why? Images by Lucy Hall Photography – all rights reserved and are subject to copyright Thursday Dressage Thursday saw Tim Price compete two of his three rides, Bango who was on first thing and Xavier Faer who was on last thing and after the first day of Dressage Tim has two of his three rides in the top ten!! Bango Tim got the dressage of to a great start with Bango and certainly laid the gauntlet down! It all started with a very cheery ‘good morning’ to the officials upon entering the beautiful dressage arena at Burghley. Bang seemed very relaxed upon entry to the arena and within it as did Tim it was just a pleasure to watch. They had a very lovely rhythm and proceeded to do a very accurate test with super Halts and a lovely Medium Walk. Tim did a great job with the Flying Change from the Medium Canter it was very smooth. The whole test just looked effortless and the score definitely reflected it with them gaining only 29.6 penalty marks which kept them in the lead for some time. They smashed their score from Badminton which was earlier in the year and the score they had from here last year 16th after dressage last year at Burghley – finished tenth Tim Price on Bango @Burghley 2019 Ben Way Caught up with Tim after his first ride of the day: Talk me through your test Tim It was deserved of every mark, it was a very smooth test. He’s a horse thats a little bit sometimes, we’d call him ‘brittle’, he can be really good at home but when he comes out he can get like he’s on eggshells. So my main prerogative today was to be smooth and flowing, and then when everything is coming together and you’re out there you realise maybe you are being a bit too smooth and flowing but that was job number one and I was really pleased we were able to achieve that. Did being in first thing on Thursday morning help with the dressage considering your horses personality as there is not as much atmosphere? Totally!! Yep I’m really lucky the way that went as he’s a horse that reacts a lot to what is around him, and it did definitely feel like a Burghley atmosphere out there but in the morning it’s still getting going on the first day. When riding at Burghley you have to be fit, with you having three rides here have you done any extra training to ensure you are fit enough yourself ? Short answer would be no!, but I am very busy with what I am doing and this time of year, I think I’m a bit of a slow burner aren’t I , so this time of year is a good time for me as I am all up together and very tuned into the job physically and every other way. So I come here feeling ready to have one of those big days. I remember watching the likes of Andrew (Nicholson) and Oli (Townend) in the past and thinking they were crazy having three on a Saturday here but hopefully we will be able to do it and have a good rest on Saturday night,...

Efraim had a very nice expression on his face, ears pricked in a positive way and no tension. The first half of the test was very even and looked fairly relaxed to start with and in good balance. Though a loss of balance through the lateral work lost them some marks. The Walk was of good quality and was relaxed up to were they had to pick up Medium Walk then Efraim just anticipated the Canter. They had nice Extended Canter however the changes were not clean and it looked like Efraim started to just get a bit more tense after those and there was moments where there was a loss of outline and frame. However the last few movements pulled them back some marks and they finished on a score of 44.5%. This is the first time at Burghley for both George and Efraim so its all experience and they will take away plenty from here. We caught up with George to get his thoughts on his test and more detail about what his thoughts are for the cross country ….. Well done George , Talk me through your test? are you happy with your performance ? It has been a big learning curve for us today. Leo warmed up the best he has ever gone. Really relaxed and listening. Unfortunately when we got in the atmosphere just got the better of us and it all became a bit tense. Due to this we missed the changes and made a few too many mistakes. This was reflected in the mark. It wasn’t a disaster by a long shot but we have loads of room to improve. Have you had a more in depth look at the cross country course yet? what combinations do you think will pose a question for your horse? You really need to use your brain the whole way round. There are so many options, short, long, wiggly! The leaf pit is an early test, especially on a strong horse like Leo. But there is a more straight forward long route. There are big questions the whole way around the course, but to me the two biggest would be the Joules white oxers to the corner. This is huge and leaves no room for error. The other would be the upright gates which look to be on an attacking one stride. How many times have you walked the course? who do you walk the course with and why? I have now walked the course 3 times. Once with the family, once with Chris Bartle and once with Matt Heath. It’s nice to get other people’s opinion but in the end I have to make the decisions and have back up plans where needed. Will you watch others ride the cross country before you ? I’ll watch the first few riders go out to get a feel then just watch a few mates go round. But I’m not a big watcher and will probably hide in the lorry for the majority. Main Image Courtesy of Julian Portch Photography – all rights reserved and is subject to copyright Simon Grieve GBR It will be the seventh visit to Land Rover Burghley for local British rider Simon Grieve (37) who first competed here in 2012 – he has six completions to his name, four with his former ride ‘Cornacrew’. It will be a first at the level for this year’s entry ‘The Rutman’. Simon who is based near Tilton on the Hill, Leicestershire, was just five when he joined The Pony Club and in1998 he competed at the Pony Club Championships at Sansaw. After leaving school, he spent a year working in Debbie and Patrick Edmundson’s yard in Suffolk, riding and competing all types and sizes of horses. During this time he competed the advanced event mare ‘Ashdale Cover Girl’ with whom he was short-listed for the Young Rider European Championships. Simon then moved to Leicestershire as stable jockey for an Irish showjumper followed by two years as second rider to Sarah Cohen at Preci-Spark event horses. In 2006 Simon set up as a freelance rider. His breakthrough came when he linked up with BE Coach Caroline Moore who pointed some owners in his direction. In September 2012, he completed his first four-star with Cornacrew. In May 2013 Simon was side-lined from the sport for three months after suffering from Paget-Schroetter disease, a rare form of Deep Vein Thrombosis. He recovered just in time to compete at Burghley. Simon trains with Harry Payne and out of season is a keen skier. The Rutman aka Vinnie owned by Joanne Rutter is a 10-year-old Irish-bred gelding. He is by the Dutch-bred stallion Cancun VDL a son of the famous jumping sire Corland who stands in Ireland. He has been brought through the grades by Simon; Burghley will be the horse’s first at the level. It will be the sixth visit to the event for Jonelle who last competed here in 2016 (when she was 3rd with ‘Classic Moet’, her 2018 Badminton winning ride). This will be a first Burghley for Faerie Dianimo. Jonelle and Classic Moet are the newly crowned British Open Champions having won the title at Gatcombe recently. In 2018 they were members of the New Zealand team for the 2018 WEG (19th). In June 2018, with ‘Faerie Dianimo’ and just four weeks after winning Badminton Jonelle won the 4* at Luhmühlen. The pair was a member of the team at the 2016 Olympic Games. Jonelle hails from Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand and is the youngest of four from a non-horsey family – her father was a butcher. Her ‘bizarre passion for horses’ is something of a mystery and was fired when she made a friend who had horses. After school Jonelle went to study law at Canterbury University, and completed the first year before giving up to pursue her dream of eventing at the highest level. In 2004 Jonelle was a reserve for the Athens Olympics and in 2006 the Aachen World Championships with ‘Mazetto’ with whom she first completed Badminton in 2004. With ‘Flintstar’ she was a member of the New Zealand team that won bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games. In 2014 with Faerie Dianimo she won the Blenheim CIC3* and the mare was then fourth at her first four-star in Pau. In 2014 with Badminton entry Classic Moet she rode as an individual at the World Equestrian Games where she was fourth. Classic Moet was the highest placed mare with the fastest time of the day. She trains with dressage rider and judge Isobel Wessels and Luis Alvarez. Jonelle enjoys cooking and off the beaten track holidays andof course watching the All Blacks play Rugby. She and husband Tim began dating in 2001 and came to the UK together to prepare for the 2004 Olympic Games. They relocated to the UK in 2005 and married in NZ in 2013 and have a two-year-old son called Otis. Faerie Dianimo, owned by Trisha Rickards, Jacky Green and Jonelle Price is a 14-year-old British-bred mare. Bred by Trisha Rickards she is by the Hanoverian Diamaggio out of the former advanced event mare Faerie Dazzler by Catherston Dazzler. Faerie Dazzler is also the dam of Tim Price’s Burghley entry Xavier Faer (by Catherston Liberator and also bred by Trisha Rickards).
